Joshua Tree and Palm Springs.

Today Marg and I drove out to Joshua Tree, about 100 miles east. Our first stop, before driving into and through the national park, was a neat, hippy-like bunch of stores out there in the desert, with an eclectic bunch of stuff. Classic southern California, I’d say.

We visited the small stores, which were, well, eccentric, but some had some good stuff. Some were closed, such as Alien Robot Museum, which was disappointing, but Marg’s been inside and said it wasn’t much. Then, after a while, we drove through the national park. stopping at Skull Rock.

Our day was mostly driving and talking, and after Joshua Tree we headed 50 miles south to visit Palm Springs. I’ve never been that interested to go, but Marilyn and Alan have been a couple of times, so it seemed worth checking out. They especially liked the hiking areas there, such as Palm and Indian Canyon, which were closed by the time we arrived, late in the afternoon, but I was glad to drive through and see the place, with street names like Bob Hope Drive, Frank Sinatra Drive, and Dinah Shore Drive.

But Marilyn Monroe was not to be missed (plus, I don’t see how anyone could miss her)

We arrived back in Claremont probably around 7, picked up some Mexican food from Petiscos, a local place, and ate at home with Mark. Although I was surprised I could actually tell any difference at all, although the food was tasty, with my new-found Mexican palette I found it kind of bland compared to what I’d been eating in Mexico.

Tomorrow, I head up to Pacific Grove to meet up with Kaye.
