A Day in Mazunte.
had a sort of fitful night’s sleep, largely because of the heat, and also because Maisie had me drink so much to rehydrate myself I had to go to the bathroom multiple times. Still, that’s a good thing.

I spent a couple of hours in the morning just hanging out with Anna and Lance, and then I took off for a couple of mile walk, heading to Punta Cometa, which is the point/peninsular that separates Playa Rinconcito from Playa Mermejita, from which you can see the sun rise in the east and set in the west, all along the same horizon, the only point in Mexico from which that’s possible. Of course, you’d have to sit there all day.
I went a little too late, not really starting out until around 11, and it was a fairly rugged 2 mile round-trip, with a lot of uphill walking, in very, very hot weather. Only in the high 80s, but high in humidity, it was a bear. I spent a little time at the point, before heading back and that hot journey to my hotel.

When I got back to the hotel, really the first time I’d been here other than dropping off my backpack yesterday afternoon, after taking a shower I pretty much fell into a deep sleep on the bed for a couple of hours. That was good, and much better than my previous night’s sleep, and as it turns out better than the sleep I was going to have later this evening.

The sound of the waves crashing on the beach below is ever present and fantastic, and a sound I could hear from my room, as long as the overhead fan was off, sounding as though the Pacific was right outside my bedroom window. Which it, more or less, was, just a few hundred feet below. Beautiful.

After I got up, I really didn’t do much more, as it was around 4 pm, and around 5 I headed to join Anna and Lance on Mermejita beach to watch the sunset.

There were only a relatively few other people on the beach, and it’s remarkable that’s such a beautiful area, with its beautiful sandy tropical beaches is so empty. We were joined by Maisie, and her cousin Tilly, who just arrived from England, and Maisie’s good friend Jules on the beach, and just hung out. Lance, was at a local bar watching the Super Bowl, with all the other Americans and Canadians.

After watching the sun set over Playa Mermejita, we headed to a local bar/restaurant on the beach, and listened to some really interesting music played by a local band, which was pretty spacey and which I really enjoyed. During the band’s break, the 5-year-old daughter of the owner of the bar sang several songs, and she was really great. She had such confidence and stage presence even asking (in Spanish), “do you want another song?,” not to mention great timing and rhythm. I can only imagine if she sticks with singing, how great she’ll be as a teen and then adult.

We stayed a while, listening to music and talking, and then we headed back to Anna’s house, and I came back to my hotel, for my first night’s sleep in my hotel room.
It was a beautiful moonlight night on the beach, which blacked out many of the stars, but still a beautiful canopy, clearly seen from my balcony/patio. And to bed I went.
